Nuclear Engineers research ways that we can use nuclear energy and radiation. They develop processes, tools, and systems that harness this powerful energy for ships and spacecrafts. They may work on the nuclear fuel cycle and the safe disposal of nuclear waste. In addition to energy, nuclear radiation can be used to diagnose and treat certain medical conditions. Nuclear engineers work in research laboratories and power plant control centers. To become a nuclear engineer, a bachelor’s degree in mechanical or chemical engineering is needed. Many jobs also require a master’s or doctorate in nuclear engineering.
